Young skateboarders take to San Rafael park in competition

Seven-year-old Katin Lopez-Garcia recently decided he wants to be a professional skateboarder when he grows up.

To get a jump-start on his dream, the San Anselmo boy joined young skateboarders at a Game of Skate contest at McInnis Skate Park in San Rafael on Saturday.

More than 20 young skaters performed backside 180s, no comply tailslides and other maneuvers at the event put together by Marin County’s parks department and Shenanigans Boardshop based out of Southern California.

“It’s such a healthy alternative to get kids outside,” said Craig Solin, acting chief ranger for Marin County Park’s central region. “It’s super cool.”

Families lined the wall, watching as the skaters took over the park.

James van Kriedt, 37, of Mill Valley, watched as his son Ian van Kriedt, 8, performed maneuvers he has learned from weekly skateboarding lessons.
