San Jose airport terminal cleared after ‘prohibited items’ get past screening

SAN JOSE — Travelers departing from Terminal A at Mineta San Jose International Airport late Saturday afternoon should expect significant delays after a security snafu where contrabrand got past screeners, prompting authorities to canvass the entire terminal and re-screen every passenger.

Details were scarce, but airport officials said “prohibited items” were inadvertently allowed into the terminal around 3 p.m.

“They weren’t properly screened,” airport spokeswoman Rosemary Barnes said.

As a result, about 200 passengers who got terminal’s past the security checkpoint were required to be re-screened. But even that won’t be complete until airport security, TSA agents and San Jose police officers sweep the terminal to find the items in question.

Barnes said the breach stemmed from an issue between an unspecified airline and TSA.
