A proposal to change the name of an intersection just south of Salinas from one that references the Confederacy to one honoring farmworkers will move forward, officials say.

The county’s Legislative Action Committee approved a proposal by Monterey County Supervisor Luis Alejo to rename Confederate Corners as Campesino Corners Wednesday afternoon, Alejo said. 

It will now go before the county board of supervisors, most likely in November.

It’s located at the intersection of Highway 68 and Hitchcock Road, he said. Though no signage or plaque identify it that way, it is the official name of the area on record at the U.S. Geological Survey, he said. 

That means it also shows up on digital maps.
