With air quality from the North Bay fires reaching unhealthy levels throughout the Bay Area, the South Bay’s largest high school sports league announced Thursday morning that all of its athletic contests, indoors and outdoors, are canceled through the weekend with no make-up dates.
Blossom Valley Athletic League commissioner Colette Kirk, whose three-division league has 24 schools and is a member of the Central Coast Section, said she made the unprecedented decision because student safety comes first.
“The BVAL is comprised of four school districts,” she said. “In consultation with several of those district offices, principals and athletic directors, and we also consulted with the CCS office with regard to any playoff ramifications — especially regarding football and possible tournaments this weekend for water polo and volleyball — I felt that it is a very serious issue and student safety needs to be my No. 1 priority as the BVAL commissioner.
